My unpopular opinion on Kpop Demon Hunters
Can we get into K-pop Demon Hunters for a second because this one has me confused.
Why?
Because across the board most Christians–even well-known established faith resources meant to guide parents in guiding their children—don’t seem to have much issue with the movie.
Their take: have a conversation with your kid to frame it biblically and you’re probably good.
Well, I’m not good.
Now, I am a Harry Potter and Fortnite kind of mom. I’m strict but I’m not strict...you feel me?
I was hesitant to watch the movie at first because of the word “demon,” but after watching some of it and hearing positive things, we gave it a watch.
And honestly, you can probably get through most of it by having a conversation with your kid.
BUT...
Then there is the song “Idol.”
“Keeping you in check, keeping you obsessed
Play me on repeat in your head
Anytime it hurts, play another verse
I can be your sanctuary
Know I'm the only one right now
I will love you more when it all burns down
More than power, more than gold
Yeah, you gave me your heart, now I'm here for your soul
I'm thе only one who'll love your sins
Feel the way my voicе gets underneath your skin
Don't you know I'm here to save you?
Now we runnin' wild
Yeah, I'm all you need, I'ma be your idol
Don't let it show, keep it all inside
The pain and the shame, keep it outta sight
Your obsession feeds our connection give me all your attention”
I almost broke into tears when I saw the scene play out. And the only reason I let Roman finish the movie was to at least see good triumph over evil.
But that song and scene alone convict me hard enough that the movie is a no-go in our home. And Roman knows why.
Here’s my one question for you that might make the difference:
Would you be ok with those words running through your kid’s mind like it’s living there rent free?
Except, the rent ain’t free, if you know what I mean, Because those words come with a cost.
How often, as believers, are we telling others and telling ourselves to protect our minds? We do it all the time. Books are written on the subject. It’s why I don’t watch The Conjuring, people.
And yet, protecting the minds of our littles is left to, “well, a conversation will do work.”
Sometimes it will, yes. Case in point: Harry Potter.
But your kid is much more likely to rehearse the words to Idol in their head over and over again than they are to replay your conversation.
I hope I don’t come across harsh or unsympathetic. Because I do care. We are ALL in a daily battle for our kids. It’s just sad how much is out there that will only hurt them.
And I don’t always get it right.
Neither do we all have the same convictions from the Holy Spirit. I simply wanted to offer a clear argument that most aren’t making. And for some reason, this feels like an important conversation worth having.
What do you think? Am I alone in this?
